Musixmatch is an Italian music data company and platform for users to search and share song lyrics with translations. It is the largest platform of this kind in the world[2] having 73 million users (50 million active users)[3], 14 million lyrics and 80+ employees.[1][4]
Overview[edit]
Musixmatch's mobile app displays lyrics synchronised with the music being played.[5] Its native apps can scan all the songs in a user's music library, find lyrics, and be used as a music player. On Android, it also supports music streaming services like Spotify, Google Play Music, Deezer, Rhapsody, and YouTube.[6] The company also has global agreements with Apple Music, Amazon Music, Instagram, Facebook, Google Search and Spotify.[7]
MusixMatch also allows users to contribute lyrics and synchronizations to lyrics in exchange for points that correspond to levels and badges.
If a user gets enough points, is at a particular membership level or higher, has one of the highest ranking badges, and contributes enough high quality lyrics and synchronizations, they can apply for Curatorship and become a Lyrics Curator[8]. Curators have extra permissions and are able to get paid for their contributions. Specific curators can get the role of Specialist. Specialists are Curators but have permissions similar to those of an administrator or MusixMatch employee[8].
History[edit]
Musixmatch was founded in Bologna in 2010 by Massimo Ciociola,[9] Gianluca Delli Carri, Valerio Paolini, Francesco Delfino, and Giuseppe Costantino. In 2016 Andrea Gaudenzi joined the company as Chief Revenue Officer, and in January 2019 became a Board Member.[10]
Musixmatch went live in July 2010, and as of January 2015 had raised $14.1 million in angel and venture capital funding.[2] Musixmatch has signed agreements with publishers such as EMI Publishing, Warner/Chappell Music,[11]Universal Music Publishing, Sony ATV, Kobalt, Peer Music and Disney Music.[12]
The company provided Spotify's lyrics user interface on Spotify Desktop[13] until this service was discontinued in May 2016.[14]
In November 2019, Spotify and Musixmatch launched a new partnership, allowing Spotify's users on mobile devices to see time synced lyrics.[15]
In June 2019, Musixmatch launched a partnership with Instagram, allowing all users to add Lyrics Stickers to any Instagram Music Story.[16]
